My interest in a new site is only for the sake of leaving this place. For going somewhere else. I guess I just think it’s odd to keep posting here as if things haven’t changed. It’s weird to me. That’s why I haven’t really said much at all since he died.by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quotejasonstone20 So why would making a new forum change any of that? Change what exactly, the participation rate?by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
The site had already declined in participation quite a lot in the last few years, and now the founder and central figure is literally dead, and you guys STILL can’t let it go? Seriously?by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
To me it would seem best to archive this as a way to capture the years of discussion where Cliff was running his own thing. As a sort of permanent memorial to the man. Then start something else to continue the discussion in his distinct absence while maintaining the principles of discussion and inquiry that he held in such primacy.by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed

QuotecKc … would need to select a domain name etc. register it. Old Spice had a good idea, I thought. Call it “Beyond 0.1 Micron”by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
QuotecKc Has anyone considered the thought of just using a private facebook group? Facebook is the spawn of the evil synth, Mark Zuckerborg. I forward the motion that anything too closely connected to Silicon Valley and it’s self-appointed Supreme Oligarchs be completely avoided. QuoteOld Spice Well while we wait for more feedback. We should probably look into what is needed to host and operate a forum. What the easiest, low cost, and features we might want or need. From what I can tell, Phorum (the current software here) is 5 euro per month for hosting. And on their site they claim it to be very customizable, very open, so it may be a viable option. Other than thatby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
QuoteOld Spice I'm in favor of archiving this forum and creating a new forum. Would allow the community a chance to tailor the forum to the current state of discussion. Which I think has broadened beyond knives to other applied sciences as well lots of other topics. This might prompt some growth beyond the current laser focus on knives. It might ease resuming discussion as well. Its not theby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 Anyone into casting bullets? I’m looking for some info to decide if I want to get into it. I discussed that with my uncle a while ago when we were making some ammo for my .44 Mag. After looking at the cost of the supplies, the time required, cost of lead ingots, and comparing that to the cost of simpy buying lead bullets, we decided this: Unless you’ve got ready access to a supplyby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Thought it might be interesting to publish something he said to me once, I still had this saved in an email cache. Hopefully his own words will help some of us: Ryan, There is suffering and pain, and some people have it more than others. I see it in the kids I work with, and it is hard to understand anything aside from the fact this has to be a world of random chance because how else coulby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Knife stuff aside, that guy did a lot for me. This one really hurts.by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
After getting the rifle zeroed at 55 yards, I took a standing offhand shot at the same distance, on a cold barrel, to see if I could hit the intended target. Given that the deer on the target is slightly smaller than the real thing, it looks like I’ll have no problems making clean kills at my typical hunting ranges. I also shot 2 separate strings of 3-round rapid fire, firing as fastby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed

Quoteme2 I’ve heard people say to use the bead like a red dot. Put the thing on the thing and press the thing. On rifles, that’s how they’re meant to be used. Sometimes on shotguns also, though that depends on the individual gun and the way it’s set up. Often shotguns are designed to have the bead held below the target, especially with shotguns designed specifically for clays or birds. Witby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 If it’s an option and you can change the front sight, I’d recommend a blade sight instead of the bead. I tried both and the 0.065” blade I have now is considerably easier to use based on my limited trials with it. I can use a center hold on 12” targets at 100 yards with the new blade, but had to use a 6 o’clock hold with the bead. The only company that made a blade front for these mby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
It’s been a long time since I’ve extensively shot with iron sights on a rifle, and I’ve only killed one deer with irons, so I’m gonna be practicing with the 1895 occasionally through the summer and fall and then try it out for deer hunting this year.by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 I have a receiver mounted peep sight on my Marlin 336 and just added a front Patridge blade highlighted with orange. Those are nice and in a lot of ways they’re a better option than a tang-mounted sight. Much more robust and they don’t interfere with the grip, but in some cases (my 1895 as an example) they aren’t an easy option because the receiver isn’t a solid-top design like a Marby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
I had an elevation problem with the Winchester rifle. The rear sight wouldn’t move down enough to actually get it zeroed, I was still shooting 8” high at 50 yards. But a Marble Arms peep sight appears to have solved the problem. I just did a quick couple of shots at 35 yards to see if it actually did what I wanted it to do, and it looks like I’ll have absolutely no problem getting a 100 yard zeroby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Have any of you guys used a Marble Arms tang-mounted peep sight before? Typically these are only used on lever-actions or single-shots.by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quotejasonstone20 Ryan, Nice. I think you will like the shoulder holster. I used a Ted Blocker Lifeline holster for years, still have it in fact. I think you’ve proved to be correct about that. After some adjustments to get it fitting like I want it to, it’s looking like a very solid system. The gun and two reloads, all in one package. And I don’t even need anything like specific pants and bby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
If you’ve got either a K/L frame or N frame that you need grips for, I’d really recommend getting some from VZ. They add some weight, mine specifically added 1.7 ounces over the factory wood grips, but they’re extremely comfortable and extremely durable. I put two cylinders full of my uncle’s 200 grain XTP’s over a case full of H110 through this thing and the grips never gave me problems, no painby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 You mean balance beam scales in general or the Lee specifically? The Lee scale does have magnetic dampening. The Lee ones specifically, I guess I hadn’t checked the box recently so I thought they were the same as they used to be, no damping system. My mistake, I suppose. That’s actually good news for me, I’m gonna try using those then. I’ll have to weigh out charges for each case thoby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Gotchya. I have those and Nathan has stated that they’re generally the most accurate scales available, the downside is that they’re very slow to use because they don’t have a magnetic dampening device. I’m considering getting a different set of scales in order to make things a bit faster but it’s difficult, other scales are not necessarily accurate or consistent. They’re very hit or miss, andby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Me2, what scales are you using? And were they purchased recently or a while ago?by Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 That’s not as big a charge for 44 mag as I had thought. You can stretch that a while. It really depends on the burn rate of the powder. Unique is about as fast as you can realistically go for the .44 Magnum, at least for me. Any faster and it starts to have problems with inconsistent velocity because of the low percentage of the case that’s full of powder. You can also play very dangeby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 I found I have turned into one of those people that shoot so they can reload. I think I’m likely to end up in the same frame. It’s just so interesting, the load development and actual manufacturing processes. I’m pretty OCD about things like symmetry, overall length, etc. and I can make stuff come out perfectly if I want to. I’m finally getting my handloading setup going. I’m kicking myself for waiting until now, but after my uncle walked me through the process for that .44 Mag, it’s gonna be a serious interest and hobby of mine. I’ve always been very particular with my ammo selection and it sort of dawned on me on Friday that I can make anything I want, whenever I want, and work with any cartridge I can manage to fiby Ryan Nafe - The Wood Shed
Quoteme2 I’m doing a really good job of talking myself into that Tika that’s been sitting at the local gun shop for a year. It’s the only left handed bolt action in the store. If it’s one of the basic T3 rifles with the synthetic stock, either blued or stainless, you’d be hard-pressed to find a rifle more accurate and with a better trigger out of the box.
