Kailash blades...Fugglesby?

I was turned on to this Nepalese company by Jet Skelton (the guy who did the Wasteland Short Sword in 4140) as they are doing a version of one of his designs.

After looking at the site, I got to wondering if this is the company of Fugglesby who used to post here.

Either way, really nice designs and even better design features in my opinion:

Hey guys! Yeah that's me alright haha
Got pretty burnt out on the knife scene a few years back but started up this Kailash Blades thing last year as a side project to other design work and it's slowly turned into a bigger and bigger thing. Still plenty of learning and growing to do, but it's great to see our work coming to be known with all you guys organically. Thanks for your kind words. If there's anything else you guys want to know, go ahead and ask away.
Take care,
Andrew

No other questions at the moment, but hoping to find the spare cash to pick one up. It's a project I hope to be able to support, especially given that it looks to turn out a great project. Even the kydex photo posted on instagram looks like top notch work.

Very nice clean designs in many cases :

Agreed Cliff. From what I can see fit and finish looks a step up from HI, and I like the spine thicknesses (they seem more appropriate in many ways) and the annealed tangs. From what little I know of it too, heat treatment discussion seems on point.

Thanks guys. The website is a bit old currently and some of the designs and photos don't quite show the level of fit and finish that we're achieving these days. Instagram is where all of our really nice custom stuff goes, check it out for a more current perspective. @kailashblades
Something that I've been trying to push for a while is having the blacksmiths make their own designs and direct their skills as craftsmen into areas where they can develop more agency and individuality rather than just pumping out standard blades for someone else as has been the way historically. Not all kamis are interested, but over the next few months hopefully we'll have a few one offs up for sale and will see what the community response is. If we could get that going it'd really be something special.

Regarding the Kydex, Siru is our Kydex man and he's pretty bloody good at what he does. I first taught him the basics in 2014 and since then his skills have developed hugely and he's even designing his own belt loops and modular carry rigs. I think right now we're held back by the availability of hardware like chicago screws in Nepal and that's something to sort out in future.

This is one of the blades we're probably most proud of. Historical patterns, proven balance, modern materials and ergonomics, good steel and efficient geometry.

Yeah, I have not really been kind of inspired to pick up a few large blades for awhile, just really busy with other things. But I hope I can get a free few weeks the summer as some of those blades really look solid.

Same Cliff. In general, I haven't had a lot of disposable income lately, and what I have had has been more aimed at smaller models (have an eye on folders from Joe and Jeremy), considering how many large blades I already have. But these got me hankering again. I like the 16" full tang Sirupate. I bet it would make a neat combo of speed and power.

Just placed an order for myself. Bought a "Historical issue" and a "Mini" for my wife. Performance grind on both...I bought her a Mothers day gift from our daughter and got the other blade for myself....you know, to save on shipping.

Looks like that link didn't work.
Maybe this will?

I totally understand what you guys mean regarding gravitating away from big blades. They take up a lot of space, cost more money than smaller knives and it's often a lot harder to find the opportunities to go out and use them the way they were inteded rather than some EDC offering. With that said though, I'll always love big knives very dearly. If either of you two would be interested in sorting out a passaround on some of our blades so you can give them a crack and give some feedback, I can definitely sort out a discount for you. Always good to get knives into the hands of people who know a bit about them and aren't afraid to give honest criticism.

Tarantella, hahaha classic. I'm certain the HSI will serve you well it's a really great feeling blade in hand. Also cheers for the heads up regarding mothers day, if I hadn't read your comment I would've forgotten to ring my mum for what must be the fourth year running.

Well it's been a couple years so an update if any of you are interested.
Jet and I did a second run of wastelands shortwords, this time two handed and they were pretty dope. We finished up by making him a "master wastelander" which was a full two handed, much longer situation that had a coffin shaped plate guard and a bunch of great faceting. I'll update the thread with a picture once I track one down.

I love choppers and it's where my experience lies, but one thing that's changed in the last few years is that I've learned much, much more about khukuris. I've always known a fair bit but I've really been pushed by necessity to get stuck into the full history and variety of the blades and I think I'm a better designer for it. It's strange but a lot of the fundamentals of khukuri design are translatable over into other blades despite being so niche and strange.

We're making our own micarta, doing stacked leather handles and are ramping up to have a crack at some other nepalese firsts this year. Some clues include pivots and borax. We're making more customs than ever and our skillset is growing like crazy. We're a bit more settled with our blacksmiths now and it really helps to be able to understand what a person excels at and what they don't so you can sketch with that in mind.

In general we've gone from strength to strength. We're looking at putting on another blacksmith soon and then just keep on bringing new guys into the fold. All the boys are getting paid more than they were two years ago let alone when they were working for other houses and even in these months of government enforced COVID shutdowns we've got everyone taken care of and on full pay anyway which is more than can be said for most businesses in australia let alone Nepal.

If you haven't seen what we've been up to lately, check out our instagram or drop by the website. Nowadayshe variety of stuff we get to make in an average month is just awesome.
Take care,
Andrew

Nice, I love khukuries. They are tied for my favorite knife design along with a bowie knife. Cliff wrote years ago that it is hard to choose between a good khukurie and a good bowie.

Absolutely! They can both be super practical knives, the khukuris have a bit more power per inch while bowies have a more functional point. I think it also comes down to the personality of the person. You want a big neat knife that everyone will think is cool? You get a bowie. You want a big weird knife that people will be slightly confused by and ask you questions about? You get a khukuri haha
