Benchmade Triage

Pretty standard Benchmade fare. Axis lock, g10 handles, and as an extra bonus a 440c seatbelt cutter.

But N680 steel seems to be a good choice for this knife. Supposed to be rust proof, and I can imagine it would be a fair bit tougher than 154cm or s30v. A decent steel to go with a decent lock? Would this steel be actually suited for hard use? (prying, cutting into things that will damage the edge, stuff like that)

The auto version (about 100$ more expensive)

And the standard version, orange g10 uncoated blade

I'd rather have an N680 Griptillian, which is about $50 cheaper.

I like that. Hadn't ever seen it before. Don't know much about N680 though.

C Amber: N680 looks to be similar to something like 440B or 12C27 according to zKnives.

Then it would seemingly make more sense for hard use than other many other stainless choices.

Thank you Bill

You can get a custom from them as well.

It's a fine grained, small carbide stainless steel like AEB-L, with more free Cr for corrosion resistance. Clearly better that 440B, which is a coarse carbide stainless steel, with at least 10% carbide volume. It definitely looks like a nice steel smiling smiley.

Thanks Bogdan M!!!

Am I correct in thinking that there's not enough C in the N680 to tie up the extra Cr and make significant amounts of Cr carbides?

Hi Collin, by the Carbon content alone, definitely. However, there is some added Nitrogen, we don't know how much. But it can't be too much, as maximum attainable hardness is 58 HRC, which means it is 0.1 to 0.2 % max. Bucorp themselves say it's a fine carbide steel, probably pretty similar to 14c28n, so yeah, it looks like the kind of steel Cliff is secretly helping to sell with this forum smiling smiley.

Thanks, Collin, quite frankly, the knowledge for the contributions is also gathered, either directly, or from references found on this forum, so no merit here.

Well, some merit. You're doing a better job gleaning that information than I am as I spend a lot of time here and couldn't have answered the question with as much detail as you did.
