Ha. When it comes to traditional styled Japanese swords with some modern kickassedness, I do think Dan Kefeller is the man to see.

The white handle wrap doesn't seem very practical in a zombie infestec environment.

You mean Ultra Dry? I think Ultra Dry would be liquid gold during the Zombie Apocalypse. Blood, gore, brains... no problem. With Ultra Dry on your clothing and gear Zombie splatter is a thing of the past.

Personnally, I think a conventional katana is a poor Zombie Survival choice. It's too short to take advantage of a two handed wielding, and too long and "blade heavy" (though that's quite relative) to get the speed and manoeuvrability one would want with a single hand sword. We have to keep very deep in our mind that katanas were designed to be two handed swords for rather short japanese warriors, compared to a modern european/american. European two handed longswords (the kind pictured in Lichetenauer and Fiore dei Liberi fencing manuscripts, not the Cold Steel kind) take full advantage of our stature (when you look at the size of armors, wearers were about our size), especially regarding reach and speed, but also has way more efficient striking surfaces (pommel and guard). I believe one can easily outcut a katana with a well made and properly sharpened longsword.

As single hand swords goes, I would favor either pre-medieval or post-medieval swords, namely viking/merovingian swords, or a swept hilt cut-and-thrust sword (17th century style). The former is basically an optimized 30" machete (pure slashing), with a thin and wide blade, the later offering hand protection (which rapidly turns in jaw offense), and more versatility. As one may not picture well what a cut-and-thrust is, Hanwei made one:

Schiavona and Scotish broadsword and backsword are of the same category, only with a heavier, more protective hilt.
If proper designed for infantry, with a blade the right length, weight and balance, they can be extremely maneuvrable for their size.

If you don't have to behead it, it's not a real zombie.

Or to quote Hagar The Horrible:

Swords for show;
Axes for go!

This kind of cut-and-thrust may be a bit on the light side, but I have almost no doubt beheading is not a problem at all with "viking" swords. In fact, there are contemporary accounts of extremely dreadful cuts in battle, of men cut from shoulder to hip with a single blow (of a single handed sword). I should ask my brother who's studying old norse, danish and icelanding litterature for more precise quotes, but I'm sure such kind of cut has been reported. So, a neck...

Not to mention the longsword, which though relatively light for the size, allows for high blade speed and maneuvrability. Beheading shouldn't be precisely trivial, but easily achieved with some practice and training. Of course, other limbs can easily be removed also.

Thrust is great for one-on-one duels (hence specialized swords like rapier). For large melee, battlefield recovery might be too slow, zombie "physiology" might be more immune to it (no real "vital" organ). I'd go for slash oriented weapons: falchion, glaive, fauchard...

All good points. Personally I think dual wielding a cutlass and a silenced 9mm is the way to go when the ZA gets here. It gives you options.

You need a katana for Z-Day 'cuz they are cool, and 2 handed use allows you to cut huge swaths through the horde... must be ancient, folded, and diff hardened and cost no more than $99. It should also be heavy and light, and meant to be used in pairs like traditional katana winking smiley

Actually if encountering a horde I would like the 2 handed option, and single edged for some dramatic spin based moves where I use my body weight on the spine of the blade to slow-cut multiple Z for the camera crew which always seems to show up for these things.

Rest of the time I want high capacity .22lr. If you need headshots anyway I don't want the extra weight of large cartridges. I can easily carry thousands of .22 (my BOB has 3k) It's also the most likely to be resupplied from foraging

Maybe also a single shot 22 with a 500 rd hopper clipped near the action. Climb up a water tower or sturdy tree, relax, pop-snick-load-snick-repeat

Can you actually be guaranteed results with a 22? What is the rule for brain shots, is it frontal lobe, volume damage, etc. ?

This is a good question. I waffle between 9mm, .45 and .22 on best ZA cartridge.

I might switch my 9mm suggestion to .22 as you can carry far more ammo that way. Shot placement will be easier with a .22 than any other cartridge. Easier to silence, however you get the most silenced damage per shot with a sub-sonic .45.

Anyway, a .22 hollowpoint should enter the skull and then bounce around. A 9mm or .45 is likely to go right through a softened zombie skull.

Another advantage of the .22 is the Ruger 10/22... soooo many options for that little rifle. I think only the AR-15 has more aftermarket parts and accessories than the Ruger 10/22. You could have a suppressor, bayonet, folding pistol grip stock, night vision scope, 30 round clip-together banana mags, laser sights, flashlight and every other rifle accessory is available for a 10/22.

You can have a silenced .22 handgun as backup, which uses the same ammo.

Carrying 500 rounds of .22 ammo is much easier than carrying 500 rounds of 9mm, or .45.

Be aggressive...

I would argue :

-high guage shot gun over rifle in general

-war hammer over sword

At the very least :

-no shortage of ammunition as everyone else is hording 22's
-higher spread pattern for stress shooting
-it appears very minimal brain damage is necessary anyway
-410 is a much higher number than 22
-talking about guages sounds much cooler than rambling about calibers
-a nice sharp edge smashing into skulls is very quickly a fancy club anyway
-in close quarters the hammer hitting you in a tackle isn't a real problem
-a thrown hammer to the face can settle an impolite conversation quickly
-who is going to steal a large hammer
-hulk smash is a much cooler battle cry
-all the weabo's will have swords
-real men smash brains apart
-cutting a zombie is like quoting metallurgy on the Forums

Changing my weapons to:

12 ga hammer (unfortunately ammo is heavy so this will just be for around the house but it's pretty manly, hope the camera crew gets this in use)

Serrated Titanium alloy Katana 42" oal but not with the white wrap... I think yellow and black

a baguette, really hard and crusty

January and February

Still keeping the 10/22 handy.

For me the cannonical zombie film is Return Of The Living Dead. Because it has the best script, it's the funniest, and it has Linnea Quigley naked...

..And it inspired an episode of Father Ted.

And Return says that no pokey little .22 is going to stop a zombie. You have to DESTROY the brain case, or at least sever it from the spinal column.

The second best zombie material is Garth Ennis's "Crossed", which is unto TWD as The Sex Pistols were to Green Day. (But probably not something you should read if you're want to be at all optimistic about the Zombie Apocalypse.)

A .410 shotgun is probably a good way to go as well. I do like my Saiga .410, and it can be effectively suppressed (once again, not as easily as a .22) Thanks to the Taurus Judge there is all sorts of crazy specialty ammo out for the .410 now as well. Hmm, hard to say. I still think a .22 rifle/pistol combo would be great for the ZA, although a Saiga/Judge combo certainly looks like a powerful duo.

As for melee weapons, the hammer could be a good choice. Whatever melee weapon you go with I think one of the major aspects to consider is binding. Anything that is going to bind or stick in a zombie's skull is going to take away valuable time needed to attack the next zombie. I think a hammer could be prone to sticking, at least if you are using the blunt end. Hammer like, but less likely to bind...

Estwing Black Eagle Tactical Tomahawk

If you did want to go with a hammer probably best to go tactical...

If you think a two-handed melee weapon is the way to destroy zombies then a katana does look hard to beat, as wnease suggests "2 handed use allows you to cut huge swaths through the horde." The katana has reach as well as slashing and stabbing capabilities. Skull binding can still be an issue however. Here's a two-handed melee weapon that is unlikely to bind but should cause massive skull crushing damage due to its weight and pressure concentrating flanges...

Medieval Bar Mace by Windlass Steel
Overall Length: 29 1/4''
Blade: 20''
4 lb 9 oz
The Medieval Bar Mace is based on a weapon of this type found in the River Thames, though it saw use through out Europe. Little finesse was needed for this brutal mace, and a warrior strong enough to wield it could crush helms and break swords with the heavy blows it could deliver. Made from four bars of carbon steel with a wood and leather grip and a large steel pommel to help balance it, this is indeed an awesome weapon.

Captive bolt guns yay! Somebody should design an app for that.

Now I am changing my secret weapons from January and February to... the internet. We will let the zombies surf for sites of zombies eating things and maybe of preparations for Z-day which I am sure they will find amusing; they have limited higher functions so they will be stuck there forever
Re: AMC The Walking Dead - Michonne's Katana

Actually, the hard to beat two handed melee weapon isn't the katana, but the long sword. The blade is usually longer by 4 to 10 inches, and tapers much more than on a katana, allowing for higher speed and quicker recovery. An average tip thickness for longsword is around 3-3.5mm, while it's more around 5-5.5mm on katana. Not to mention longsword are double edged, and this allows for fast beheading techniques (I don't exactly know the name of that technique, but the sword is held horizontally over the head, with a first forward step, keeping the blade horizontal and hilt over your head, you slash to the right, and with a second step, you reverse the movement, and slash to the left, and you can go on and on and on, making large circles with your sword over your head, clearing everything in a one meter radius).

Longsword blades can't really bind (not into flesh at least), but it has another advantage over blunt weapons, which is the ability (it shares with the katana or any other long edged weapon) to severe limbs. Sure the zombie isn't dead (well, dead for good), but a crawler or a bitting trunk is always less dangerous than a full zombie, if you lack time to aim precisely. That bar mace looks good, but it seems very tip heavy, requiring much energy to wield. And that's one of the reccuring problem with blunt weapons: either you rely on energy transfer (blunt force) and it's taking more muscular effort, either on penetration (like with bec de corbin and such) and then there is a risk of binding.

No you can't.
Old sniper rule. Never go for the brain or the heart, but take the brain stem. From the front side you aim at the upper lip, write under the nose and from aside you aim just behind the ear.

The longsword is vastly better than the katana. BUT the average Joe or Jane can't sharpen a kitchen knife. So the chances of their maintaining Richard The Lionheart surplus are pretty damn low.

I think everyone is missing two important facts about zombies:

1. They're not fast on their feet

2. You don't even have to outrun the fastest zombies, just the slowest alternative target

Therefore I suggest foregoing the heavy and encumbering arsenal and investing in these

The same goes with any edged weapon. Though were not talking about a splitting hair sharpness there, but rather a practical edge, achievable even with a file or scythe stone. Plus, if the average Joe/Jane don't get really fast some abilities and basic understanding of how things work when the technological world they know is down, they'll be turned or eaten quite fast. Natural selection would apply fiercely.

Zombies only slow walkers or crawlers?... well, it depends on the "sources" and references we take.
Anyway, running away will probably one of the best solutions. But I've read that these stilts have quite a lot of drawbacks, the main one being to require a flat and grippy ground. It's always unpleasant to fall from our normal height, but it can be really dangerous to stumble or slip from this increased height. Also the polymer springs wear of/fatigue, and may end breaking without much prior notice. Lastly, it seems it requires quite a lot of training to be experienced enough to safely pass such obstacles.

One kind of trainning, though extremely demanding physically and also quite dangerous, that will offer huge survival chances in a ZA situation, is parkour:

If after that you're still followed, survival won't be a possibility. But you can forget about carrying anything larger than a compact backpack and a tighly tied knife.

In order to have a serious discussion I think we need to decide are we facing Romero zombies or 28 day later zombies as the latter are a lot less weabo and a lot more like a breed of cracked out max-roided always starving bulemics.
