It's been a while but I got some shop time so this is what came of it:

There was more design time in it than build time! I didn't see much on the web that I liked for a neck knife. Of the ones that were light enough to seriously consider, they rarely had much of a handle. I also like a wide blade for survival work and defensive use. The butt is squared so it can be struck with a wood mallet to chisel holes.

It has become my wife's primary outdoor knife and frequently gets left in the food garden, though it was designed as a back-up. Her primary knife is heavy, prone to rust (S30V with my HT), and requires a carry system incompatible with what she normally wears. It's also difficult to sharpen unless my KMG is set up.

Lighter is certainly possible (hollowing scales, cutouts in the blade and tang) in this size of knife but I am doubtful that functionality could be maintained.

As an experiment, the first few sharpenings were done on a flattish pebble. Not ideal but definitely serviceable.

I am disappointed in the eyelets used in the sheath. Still looking for an alternative with comparable mass and size.

Recently I ordered a set of three tools, the ones you see here:

The set was purchased with the intent of having a two blades for dedicated wood processing, and one blade as a general-purpose camp knife. A Silky Zubat 330mm saw with the large teeth, a Silky Nata, and a Cold Steel Drop-Forged Survivalist.

I decided on a saw for the felling and bucking tool for wood of about 4” or greater diameter, the Nata for limbing, bucking, and felling wood that’s under 4” in diameter, and the DFS as the all-purpose knife that can be used for cooking, dressing and butchering animals, light chopping, and defense/offense against humans or wild animals.

Notes on each blade so far, basically just immediate observations on initial inspection:

Nata -

- I ordered the single-edge chisel grind, this was intended to be a dedicated limbing, chop-carving, and draw-knife tool. I specifically chose the chisel over the dual-ground model. But I believe Knifecenter made a mistake that wasn’t entirely their fault because what I received was the double-ground model inside the single-bevel model’s sheath/case. This changes it’s utility quite a bit, moving it out of the class of a specialized tool that compliments the saw and can do things that the camp knife is bad at, and into a more general-purpose chopping and splitting tool. Still very useful and will be interesting to try with the Fiskars X7 as the benchmark in chopping performance, but I’m slightly disappointed that I didn’t get the single-edge chisel model.

- The handle is good in terms of the usable length, plenty of room for both a forward grip for better accuracy and a rear grip for maximum power on the chop. A nicely tapered end hook will allow very high security in the hand but I really doubt it will cause hotspots, it’s a nice and gradual ramp.

- The sheath is very nicely done and is basically a traditional Japanese design in the sense that it’s a hard box to store it in and allows easy insertion and removal. Traditional Japanese design, but modern materials. Two big drain holes in the bottom and a strap around the handle for when you’re not using it. There’s also a removable belt clip on the sheath that means you can have the belt loop on your belt and the knife in your pack, and simply clip the sheath onto your belt when you need to start using it. Really nice feature.

- The weight distribution and handle design lead me to believe that it is not designed for fast rotational snap-cuts, but more for an up-and-down power cut that takes advantage of the raw weight and momentum of the blade. Much different than, for example, the Fiskars Brush Axe.

Zubat -

- I don’t have much to say about this one yet because I have literally no experience with hand saws of this type, I’ve always used either axes or chainsaws.

- The sheath seems really solid and has the same removable clip design as the Nata sheath.

CS Drop-Forged Survivalist -

- 52100 steel combined with an 8” blade of the clip-point style and a full-flat grind should be very versatile. Probably not great at any one task but decent enough at a wide range of things.

- My immediate concern is the large amount of exposed metal on the handle. I of course new this going in, but I decided to try it anyway. Initial experiments have demonstrated that the knife is not comfortable or even safe to use in temperatures of about 25 degrees Fahrenheit or less without gloves on.

- The sheath is the notorious CS secure-ex material that dulls edges, but being somewhat mindful of how I’m drawing and inserting it has not yet caused the edge to dull. We’ll see how it works out, I may look for a leather sheath soon anyway.

- Comfort and security of the grip design is surprisingly high, it’s not a problem to do heavy cutting on pine boards (50lbs. +) for several minutes at a time, the full dual guards provide extreme security on heavy stabs, and the end hook looks like it will be enough to allow the user to drive off the hook during chops. The handle scales are nicely textured and contoured as well. I’m really quite happy with the grip design so far but of course I’ll have to chop some wood to check for that kind of security. And use this winter will help determine how much the exposed steel in the grip will cause problems in cold weather.

Specifications on the Nata and the DFS:

Nata:

- Stock Thickness = 0.230

- Primary Grind Angle = 8.3 DPS

- Edge Angle = 21 DPS (this will have to be brought back immediately to 15 DPS and will likely bump the edge thickness up to around 0.030” to 0.035” also, which is the cross-section that gives very solid cutting ability but also high durability)

- Edge Thickness = 0.025”

- Balance Point = 2.75” in front grip and 4.625” in rear grip.

- Not functionally sharp as-boxed. No ability to slice fine papers, shave, cut grasses, etc. Edge is fully and cleanly formed, but simply lacks any kind of sharpness. I suspect that it’s because the electroless nickel plating was done after sharpening.

- Weight = 1lb 9.5oz

DFS:

- Stock Thickness = .235

- Primary Grind Angle = 3.7 DPS

- Edge Thickness = .040 to 0.045

- Edge Angle = 15 to 18 DPS, slight variation along the blade.

- Balance Point = front of guard or sharpening choil. 0.625” in front grip and 1.75” in rear grip

- Functionally Sharp as-boxed. Very cleanly shaves, slices and push-cuts receipt paper on a 45 with ease, possibly just a hint of overbuffing but not much, it’s very solid sharpness for a blade of this size/class.

- Weight = 14.5oz.

The plan going forward for the winter is to get out for an afternoon whenever the weather is decent and do a few hours of wood processing with the set of three blades, using the Fiskars X7 as the performance reference point for the two knives, and just work on getting comfortable and confident with using the saw. I’ll post back here with observations, notes on performance, and pictures, whenever work is done with the tools and I find something interesting to say about them.

On a whim I went to the local flea market today and snagged what I think is a new, in box, never used, Cold Steel Spartan for a screaming deal. Its a big blade and knife overall. Its everthing I usually don't like in a knife: recurve, large handle to blade ratio, wave style opening. What have I become?

However, I've wanted a Resilence for a while for the extra blade size, and this was a bigger blade for half the price. My only issue with recurves has been sharpening. As long as I can find a way to keep it sharp, I should be ok. I do need to switch clip sides for lefty carry and open it up a bit to keep from eating pockets. Anyone know where to get a tiny torx bit for moving clips and such?

This is an awesome deal for a knife, as this is my third or fourth favorite pattern behind the whittler, jack, and kamp:

The knife came shaving sharp both blades, but with very little slicing aggression. Slight burr at the tip of the main blade. The main blade is 2.75" and 1" wide, and is easy to open, and has a half stop, along with a match strike thumb notch. The smaller blade is 2", and 1/2" wide, and is almost the size of a main blade on my whittler patter. It isn't that easy to open, but it can be done with a little technique. Best way is to open the main blade first to half stop, and then grab the smaller blade and open it. Fit and finish are not bad, and are perfectly acceptable, especially for the price. Craftsmanship is on par with Rough Ryder knives. Steel is 440A, which is a great steel, often underrated.

(edit: bte thickness: Main blade - heel: 0.025", belly: 0.017", tip: 0.028". Secondary blade bte thickness: heel: 0.025", belly: 0.022", tip: 0.029" )

I picked up the Smith & Wesson Extreme OPS CK33 for about $13 USD, it is amazing the quality of knife you get these days for less than $20. Sure, it is heavy, around 6.5 oz for a 3 inch blade, but at least it came shaving sharp. Opening method is dual thumb studs. The G10 handles are nice and grippy, can't complain about the handle shape either, very nicely done. Fits well in forward and reverse grip, sucks for chest lever style grip because of the big hump in the handle. Screws in the handle were not even or flush. More to come once I carry this more. Speaking of carrying, the knife is tip down, right side only.

Received today and a few observations:

1: Blade is significant thinner than the standard Sebenza
2: Edge is polished. Shaves hair with some pressure. Catches beard hair in both directions
3: Blade is very smooth through the walk and talk.
4: Bog Oak feels good.
5: Cuts good through meat :)

I believe these get a lot more hand fitting than the Standard Sebenza and it shows. Especially in the grind.

Interesting how this will age with time but wont see that much pocket time until my Insingo is worn out.

I have been wanting one of these for quite some time:
Came very sharp, all three blades. Tree-topping arm-hair sharp. It shaves hair above the skin like a straight razor or Havalon Scalpel blade. This is one of the best factory edges for initial sharpness I have seen. Made of carbon steel. All three blades are about "0.025 BTE thickness. All three blade have a half-stop, a preferred feature for me. The pull on the knife is good, about the same as my Victorinox SAK Super Tinker. This is going to be my knife I keep in my Shadow-Born-Hanks pouch I use for a wallet.

I just got this knife in the mail a few days ago. It is my first knife in M390, and it is at 61HRC. The PM2 is there for scale. It is a heavier grind BTE than I usually get from this maker, around an average of "0.015 BTE ("0.018 @ heel, "0.013 @ belly, "0.016 @tip), but it is meant to be a heavier duty knife, and that is what I plan to use it for. I am wearing it weak-side cross draw, where I like to keep my fixed blades that are not neck knives, and are around 3.5"-4" blade length. The edge from the maker came arm-hair tree-topping sharp, a better edge than most production made knife factory edges. I will be comparing this knife to the Spyderco PM2 in S30V and the KWB Tanto in AEB-L that I am using as a neck knife. More to come.

edit, I forgot it is a partial tang knife. Balance point is and the rear of the finger choil. Weight is 3.15 oz without the sheath.

A month or two ago, I got the inkling to buy myself a new knife. Filled with patriotic fervor from the Coronavirus outbreak, I resolved that it should be something of US manufacture. As my cutlery needs outside of work are extremely pedestrian, I decided to get something traditional, yet locking. As I have had positive experiences with Case products in the past, I settled on this:

The Case Copperlock Warncliffe

Some Specs:

Blade Length: 2.8 in
Closed Length: 4.25 in
Weight: 2.8 oz

The knife was somewhat disappointing out of the box. Fit and finish were generally quite good. OOB sharpness was basically non-existent, with most of the edge reflecting light. The blade was incapable of cutting copy paper. The tip was also somewhat rounded:

A few minutes on a Smiths Arkansas stone quickly brought the edge up to a shaving sharpness. Not a huge deal, but disappointing for a $70 knife. The blade is also ground quite thick. I don't have calipers right now, so no exact numbers.

Doing some very simple cutting on light cardboard, no complaints about ergonomics. You do notice the blade thickness though, particularly when compared to the much thinner Case Jumbo Stockman that I have.

Not a bad little knife, but disappointing considering the price. For something that will spend most of it's service life opening boxes and cutting tape, however, I doubt the thickness of the blade will be all that big of an issue.

I've played around in the outdoors for a long time, and I am seldom without some sort of cutting tool.

I want to ask about sharpening, but I figure it is best to contribute something first.

In the picture below you will see three Svord Peasant folding knives. I like their simplicity, and the fact I can open them with one hand when my other is doing something else. You might be able to see the key ring I have dangling from the hole in the tang on the blue Peasant. I find this helps me extract the knife quickly from the deep tool pocket on the side of my 'cargo' pants.... plus it makes me feel that I'm less likely to have the knife close on my hand when I am gripping this ring while applying any sort of force to the point. I hunt a lot, and I find that these knives are all that I need for field dressing. Mostly I completely cut up an animal, leaving the skin and a lot of the bones on the hillside.

At the top of the picture is a Giesser boning knife. I got this from a relative who works with fish. Very good for boning and general field work. I often carry it when hunting.

The fixed blade with an orange handle is a Svord Trapper. The 6" blade is a bit longer than I prefer for general use, but I appreciate the length if I ever have to use it to stick a pig.

At the bottom is a Tramontina machete with a 10 inch blade. I bought a box of these... and a box of 12-inchers and gave most of them to friends and family. Now my supply has dried up, but I have a couple in each size still that will last me for a while yet. I have longer machetes too and I use them frequently. I find that the shorter ones seem to cut better in some circumstances..... typically when cutting thin bramble canes. I guess this is because they are heck of a sharp and I can swing them faster than a bigger tool.

At the lower right is a small, cheap sharpening stone that I carry in an old toothpaste tube to stop the corners pushing holes through my pockets.

The sheaths for the fixed blades are made from low density polyethylene pipe... commonly called polypipe or Alkathene. It is used a lot down here for farm water supplies. I heat it in the oven to maybe 115 degrees centigrade, then mould it into shape using boards, clamps and dummy knife handles. Crude, but very safe, convenient and relatively hygienic. The 'belts' attached to these sheaths are just bits of cord. At one end I have a button knot, and on the other I have a sliding Prusik loop which enables me to quickly adjust the size of the belt.

I'm officially 'retired' now, but by trade I'm a metalworking fitter and turner. I have made knives by metal removal and in a forge. I have no trouble getting knives sharp enough for practical use.... I can also get them shaving sharp using a steel or a fine stone. But.... I have seen Cliff's videos about getting a knife to shaving (or at least paper slicing) sharpness on a coarse stone or a brick, and I've had trouble doing that myself. I can get to the stage where I can pop a few hairs off my arm, but not nearly as good an edge as I can get with the steel or fine Arkansas stone.

If anyone has any tips as to how to get that shaving sharpness on a coarse stone, I will read them with great interest. It isn't a matter of huge importance I guess, but it fascinates me and I'd like to be able to do it. Thanks for sharing your videos Cliff.

After about 9 years of separation from its rightful owner (LOL), this knife has returned home. I am very happy to have been given the opportunity to buy it back! This is the cKc All Purpose Fighting Knife, "Boning knife" variant ( APFK-B ). I do recall a slightly more amusing term being used at one point. I will leave it to the imagination.

Anyway, it is made from Bohler N678 steel, about 1/4" stock for poking large holes in things. I would imagine cKc himself can provide more information about this particular steel and the HT. I will say that this steel is a very interesting and sensible choice. The overall design is ridiculously good for the intended task. The balance, size, and ergonomics are simply excellent. As far as tactical fixed blades go, it is difficult to beat in my opinion. I apologize for the low quality photos, I'm a bit tired and can't be bothered retaking them right now. I might post some more later on.
Finally, I would like to show it next to a large (13" OAL) folding knife for comparison purposes.

So I have been wondering if I should get something to complement my Karesuando Small Axe, and to be blunt, this tool is a seriously capable user but i bought it to be a desk piece to enjoy in my isolation..

but i was thinking it would be nice to get something of a similar vein to match in the knife world.

I really like the new Mora Kansbol, but its really not an art piece. its a knife i'd be very happy to have as a daily do everything user. and $33USD for that knife is just ridiculous value for money.

so i started looking all around the Helle, Kellam, etc etc, and got to some Marttiini

the one i wanted first, is not the one i ended up getting as it wasn't available, but this one also is a little striking

I wanted a fishing related one if I could find it, but it was unavailable. Wild Boar is popular in NZ, and also Pigs are a big thing here in the philippines, so this seems like a nice one to have.
this fishing themed salmon knife would have been nice.. but im happy
I don't know what it is about KWB knives, but they are like I designed them myself. Kyle was kind enough to send me this knife. Super thin stock, about as thick as a Victorinox paring knife, awesome AEB-L steel at 62HRC, amazing two-tone handle. This is the second knife that is supposed to be used as either a pocket clip fixed knife or a belt knife, and I keep using them as neck knives. Thing cuts like crazy, by far my best cutting knife.

I have been wanting one of these knives for sometime, and I finally bought one from a fellow forum user (thank you). I have the Spyderco Tenacious and Resilience as analogues for the Spyderco Military and Paramilitary 2. While the Tenacious and Resilience are awesome blades, and do everything I need in a knife, the Military and Paramilitary are a step above them. Not only do they have pointer tips (a thing I really value in a knife), they are very light for there size. As far as the steel goes, the Tenacious and Resilience were in 8Cr13MoV, one of my favorite steels, and the Military I borrowed from Shawn Houston (thank you a lot!) was in M4, and the PM2 I now have in in S30V. I really liked the M4, and S30V is a decent steel for EDC use. Once I got the blade, I resharpened the blade on my Spyderco Sharpmaker with the Diamond Rods, then stropped. The edge was tree-topping arm hair after the sharpening, and the edge felt very crisp. I think this one got a good heat treatment. More to come....

edit
(PS) The G10 is almost as grippy as an Emerson, knife, which makes this G10 awesome!

Just ordered one of these, again, more as a collectible item than something I need

Hunting Axe

this isn't really an axe intended for chopping and limbing, and for wood its intended for only very light duty. its a tiny handle.

this is similar to Gransfors Bruks Mini, in that its intended to serve more as a knife alternative, skinning, food prep i guess, filleting fish, etc etc.. smack a fish on the head.

for me, I'll prob try and take down some chickens instead of using a boning knife, and just admire it.

where it is quite different from the GB is the steel and the handle.

its 12c27 55rc, so im guessing tempered at 350c before the embrittlement zone based on their using this and testing it in a very icy cold region.
my guess is the edge will be on par with a swissarmy knife (fine by me)

the note the advantage they like to this being stainless is not rusting as you deal with animals etc.

can't wait to get it.

These two knives were purchased at a local Asian food store for $5.95 USD a piece. They came shaving sharp, although each knife had a significant burr on the edge of the blade. I made a late breakfast with both of these knives, alternating between them for comparison. I cut potatoes, red onions, green onions, jalapeño peppers, green bell peppers, and garlic. The Cleaver was a lot thicker and heavier than the Cooks Knife, and would be more at home chopping. The Cooks Knife is very thin, and it absolutely went through everything like a nice custom kitchen knife. I left the burrs on both blades to see how the effected use and edge retention, since I am interested about how a knife will cut with a burr. I am sure the knives will perform better if they had been deburred. These are a very good value, especially if you consider the performance you get out of them. They are like a Thai version of Victorinox.

Edit:
I forgot to give the blade lengths. The large Cooks knife has a blade length of 7 3/8", and the cleaver is 5 1/2" long.

I moved a little away from the orginal concept discussed:
here

Reasons:

Blade about 80-90mm long can be used for anything I could use 60mm one
so decided making it shorter would be mostly disadvantage.

Following the clean, narrow contoures with pointy tip and narrow blade
eventually lead to the shape of the puukko.

Length closed: 119,5mm
Cutting edge: 89mm

Handle tapers towards the blade for good control in pinch grip / side holdning
On the top side of the handle edges are chamfered for improved indexing
perhaps on the bottom side they are rounded..
Thats about for whats not obvious from the pictures..

Materials, lock / knife operation will be further explained..
I am currently making 2 prototypes perhaps this design
can be further evolved / modified depending on the feedback.
