Randomly stumbled upon this. Not much in the video, but I thought it was interesting someone actually decided to make a 3V axe head, let alone a competition sized one.

The truly interesting part is if you click on the Hudson Steel Supply link in the comments and price the piece of steel he started with...I won't ruin it for you.
Brand new combat/tactical offering from Buck.

Specs:

Blade Length: 5.50" (14.0 cm)
Handle Length: 5.25" (15.2 cm)
Overall Length: 10.75" (27.3 cm)
Blade Material: 5160 Carbon Steel
Blade Thickness: 0.200"

The product description is the usual mumbo jumbo, but this looks a lot more sensible than a lot of other tactical fixed blades. Knife design is very similar to the Camilius CUDA/Terzuola knife. Provided they aren't using that horrible GRN stuff for the sheath, that even looks ok.

It will be interesting to see if any of these explode like the Hoodlums did.

i actually found this video because i was looking for a sheath suitable for my Paring knife.
and then i find LT Wright has this model called a coyote which lets face it, is an overbuilt outdoor paring knife.
The image angle makes it look a little bigger relative to the South Fork than it is, but still a nice size. 8Cr13MoV, made in China. Literally just took it out of the box, so not a whole lot to say except that the knife and sheath seem very well finished for the price. Appears to be an outstanding value, bargain of the year sort of deal. (If you're into this sort of thing :) )

Not sure if it will actually make it's way to my pocket, but I really like the slim, minimalist lines. I've sort of had my eye out for something like this ever since I sold my Boker Kwaiken. The fully-ambi lock and reversible deep carry clip are big selling points for me over the Kwaiken and other possible replacements I've looked into. I wish it was about $50 cheaper, but I could say that about a lot of things lol.

Not a bad looking camp knife design to me, though not one I'm likely to purchase myself, primarily due to cost and the surfeit of fixed blades I already have that fill this niche.

I don't know a lot about 4V, but I suspect with nearly 4% Vanadium, ease of sharpening and repairing damage to the edge may be a concern for some users, though that hasn't seemed to be a deterrent for proponents of 3V or even D2 in this type of blade. 4V is also touted as having relatively high impact toughness, but what I don't know is, "Compared to what?"

The handles appear nicely contoured with all of the edges rounded, but they still appear somewhat square and blockish to me. This may be deceptive vs. the actual feeling in hand, and I may be somewhat spoiled by the fully rounded scales on my knives from Busse. Still maybe an interesting contrast to other Spyderco fixed blades which appear to be significantly more rounded, like the Temperance 2, Serrata, or the upcoming Respect bowie, among others.

All in all represent a negligence in quality. The other models are of similar price as well and I really doubt if they could be better than the Japanese produced ones. For mid tier there are the Tojiro DP: [www.tojiro-japan.co.jp]

Of course there are the Wusthof and Zwilling at the middle tier. But I have little reason to get them comparing to the Tojiro.

If you search in Chef Knives to Go you will have this. Some interesting offering but very expensive, using the Aogami #2 that is not stainless (no go for myself), and the handle is prone to accumulate liquid which is bad. (Turns out CCK = Chan Chee-Ki = my local shop! :) )

So at the moment I am looking for a 7" Vegetable Slicer (spine: 2mm ~0.08" ) and a 8" General Chopper (spine: 3mm ~0.118) in AEB-L. The handle should be made water impenetrable with a slight recess like the Wusthof Classic Ikon series. The biggest issue is that this pattern require a wide blank and thus the cost is much higher than the conventional kitchen knives.

If anyone got good suggestion please let me know.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your insight in the earlier thread, I have contacted Hiko Ito and is awaiting for his reply. On the other hand, as the project goes, I will be drained of my disposable money for some other items I am curious about. The most obvious one will be the fancy Tactical Tomahawk.

I currently have a Hardcore Hardware Rhino ($200) at home in case I need to do some prying. I really like it because I do not need to care much with the partial corrosion of D2 at where I live. I had been very curious about RMJ as they had been applauded as the holy grail of tactical tomahawk (~$500). Then I read that they use 4140 is better because of the toughness and possibility to differential HT. There also exist a CRKT produced "RMJ Rune" which the design is quite nice ($80).

I had been looking back and forth but there are really not much good discussion. I really look forward to your insights:

1. Is D2 really that brittle? Or is it just not very durable in breaking down metal chains, doors and locks?
2. Is 4140 that capable to be nearly indestructible in performing such task over a long time?
3. Is the budget hawk in SK5 a good alternative that I shall observe little difference with the 4140 RMJ in the mentioned task? Or are there actual difference?

Again my biggest challenge would likely be old coconuts and perhaps breaking some lock and light door in emergency. Thank you.

Help: Commissioning a medium camp knife (23 replies)

After reading Eee's post on commissioning knife, I had been thinking about it on and off for some time. Previously I had wanted a titanium machete from Mad Science Forge but after a long consideration I have to resort back to steel. I would like to ask for your thoughts and comments on my plan:

1. Target material
Coconut and wood (not intend to chop down a tree with it, but maybe some limbs).

2. Grind
I want a grind that is well balanced in performance and ease of maintenance. It's Full Flat, High Saber, or even Scandi. Tapering for the tip.

3. Steel
Best corrosion resistance and toughness with decent edge retention is preferred. Could it be done with LC200N? Or should I just go CPM3V or Cruwear.

4. Dimension
The steel and grind would greatly affect the weight. I desire a width of at least 1.5 inch. 10-12 inches blade.

5. Other feature
I want a raised area for thumb (gentle gimping is preferred). A slight clip point. A guard of some sort is needed - unless the blade width is wide enough and omit the need of it - while the weight still being acceptable. Hand and a half grip, ergonomic comfy fit.

A close commercial knife would be the "Bark River JX5 Vengeful One". Yet the design, and more importantly the company does not give me much faith.

Thoughts and comments are highly appreciated, thank you.

Fellas,

I'm wondering if anyone has tried out any of the reground Delica and Endura knives that Knivesplus is selling. Just the reground ones with the modified tip profile, not the acid washed ones. This type specifically:

What I'm looking for answers on is mainly if anyone has seen evidence of burnt steel near the tip where the regrind is done. I'm not sure what tools and methods they use to do it, so I'm somewhat concerned that they might be damaging the heat treatment and microstructure of the steel during the process.

I quite like the simple regrind and they only go for about $5 more than the standard ones. The added width in the tip and lowering of the point should increase the durability a little bit and also gives the blade a sort of modified sheepsfoot profile, which I like.

Anyone have one?

This isn’t really a review of a knife or knives, so much as a review of the commissioning process. Although I’ve bought plenty of handmade knives, I’ve never fully commissioned a knife before. I always had in mind to commission something, but never really felt I had enough knowledge. In the past few years I feel like I’ve learned a bit about what works and doesn’t (for me and my needs). Possible more importantly I’ve developed a bit of honesty with myself about what I use a knife for. In doing that I found that not many people make the knife I need and that custom is definitely the way to go.

I’m fortunate that I’ve met Guy Stainthorp (a local UK maker) a few times, so this all started with a conversation around a campfire. I was explaining what my perfect camp knife would look like and eventually asked if he would be interested in making it. After a couple more conversations I distilled the spec into and incredibly long email (see below). Guy also asked for photos of other knives I liked (which I went a bit overboard on).

Here’s the important bits of the mail:
“I want to give you some freedom to design something which is distinctly yours but will fit what I like and want, so I've pulled together some bullet points of likes and dislikes. I'm gathering some photos of knives I like too, which I'll send later.

- Heavy Kitchen/ Light Camp knife (may end up with a bit of a trade knife vibe). Light enough to be capable in the kitchen, but heavy enough to split kindling etc. without worrying. I'm not expecting to cut through car bonnets or chop down an oak tree.
- Full flat grind (or high Sabre) as thin as you dare at the edge. A distal taper would be lovely. I guess the stock would need to thick enough to be sturdy, but thin right down to the edge.
- 5-8 inches blade length.
- Comfortable in hammer or sabre grip and comfortable in a pinch grip just in front of the handle.
- Edge starts pretty close to forefinger in hammer grip.
- Enough clearance to cut on a chopping board.
- Not so much clearance/depth that feathering kindling becomes annoying with the handle twisting and torqueing in your hand.
- Tough steel with some corrosion resistance e.g. 14c28n, AEBL, CPM 3v, A8mod, SF100, 12c27, Niolox, Nitrobe77.
- Probably a manmade handle material like Micarta- stable enough to be used in the kitchen.
- Simple Kydex pancake sheath.
Likes, but not essentials:
- Tapered tangs, but I also like sturdy stick tangs (think Busse Basic range). If it balances well, a full tang would be fine.
- Sculpted grips
- More than one colour in the handle
- No preference either way on bolsters, but I don't think a guard would suit.
Dislikes:
- Recurves
- Jimping
- I want to avoid too much belly, for me, it makes rocking cuts on a board harder to control
- High carbide steels, I definitely don't want s30v, Elmax, D2, s90v, zdp189, m390, VG10 type steels for this sort of knife
- I probably wouldn't want a low alloy carbon steel because of very low corrosion resistance, so I was thinking of avoiding O1, 52100 etc although I might be convinced by a stainless clad laminate if you thought it was suitable.
I hope that is enough to get your creative side going. I'll get some photos with some commentary through to you later today. After that, let me know when I'm getting near the top of the list.”

Guy was very patient and came up with 4 options which he sketched out. These 3 were my favourites.

[edgematters.uk]

I got the impression the bottom one was Guy’s favourite, but whilst I agreed it was the most striking design, we thought it was probably too much belly for what I wanted. I went for the top design; I think it looks ‘very Guy Stainthorp’, but still hits the spec perfectly. We also discussed steel options and although CPM-3v might have been better for a heavier duty camp knife we settled on 14c28n. Guy ordered in some thicker 14c28n (4mm stock) and then come the difficult bit; for Guy the hard work and for me the waiting.

If we zoom forward in time a few months (do your own special effects)...

I was sat reading Edgematters and one of the members posted some pictures from Guy’s Instagram page of the 3v camp knife, which looked strikingly familiar from the sketches. After a bit of dithering, I dropped Guy a line and asked if it was still available and fortunately it was. Although it looks very similar, it is a very different beast. A combination of 6mm stock, a convex grind and 3v makes it a bit of brute. I have used it in the kitchen to good effect, but it is far more suited to heavier camp duties such as wood processing.

[edgematters.uk]…0170708-19-23-13-pro-jpg/

[edgematters.uk]

[edgematters.uk]

Now for another zoom forward in time... Dig out the flux capacitor

I got the message and pictures from Guy showing progress and confirming handle finish (I decided to match the micarta on the 3v camp knife) and then last week, the package arrived.

[edgematters.uk]

[edgematters.uk]

I have been using Edgematters to host photos since Photobucket broke the internet (with varying success). If there are problems with displaying, you can follow this link to the original thread: https://edgematters.uk/thread/16231-a-tale-of-two-camp-knives-picture-heavy/]https://edgematters.uk/thread/16231-a-tale-of-two-camp-knives-picture-heavy/[/url]

The knife is fast, well balanced and lively, great for the few kitchen tasks I have tried so far and I can’t wait to put it through it’s paces over the coming weeks. I’m hoping I wasn’t the worst customer ever, but Guy has hit the extensive spec perfectly and was a pleasure to deal with. If you are thinking of ordering a custom, go for it! The chance to get just what you want is rare in this life.

I’ll post more thoughts on both as I use them more.

I know we've had a few discussions about AEBL and similar steels in a choppers.

I've had a few blades from Hunter, the guy behind Huntsman Knife Company, and he's a good guy. He really tries to develop a quality product, so I wasn't surprised when he announced he's going to offer grass machetes in AEBL:

I think he's also going to do some of his other chopper designs in the new Nitro V, which is similar to 14C28, but appears to be a custom ordered run by Aldo.

This knife spots a dual grind which leaves the heel heavier (unspecified) which allows Murray to cut :

-wire
-pvc pipe
-dowel
-frozen pig feet

I never cut up pigs feet, but I would guess the boes are decent, heavier than most fowel, and small game.

The front portion then appears to do very well on light slicing work. It seems to show clearly the kind of balance in performance you can get with a dual grind. Though I do think that Carter exaggerates at times on how difficult it is to cut some of the material such as PVC pipe.
