The family plan to keep his youtube account and forum open, so all is good there. I am sure that they may appreciate the offer of donations to keep the forum up and running. For now, they are just dealing with their loss, but Cliffs brother intended to at least make sure that everything is paid up to the end of the year.

As far as the forum goes, we will need to work out if it is going to become an active archive to maintain, where most people are lurking in the woodshed, or if we want to try and invigorate it and keep up the legacy of its intent.

I think there is already a large wealth of information on the site that is worth keeping around for those that want to search. Cliff was clearly the backbone of this forum and I think we all noticed it with his absense.

This is not an easy topic to write about. it fills me with great sadness to tell those are unaware that Cliff passed away this weekend.

As I am not sure where this site is run, or who is running it, perhaps this site will not be around much longer. I hope we can arrange to archive it before that happens as this site is a testimony to the love and dedication Cliff had for learning and honesty in the discovery of knowledge.

I can't really know how to feel right now. i could write a book, or a paragraph and equally not share how I feel about this loss.

For many here reading this, Cliff was a man to learn from quietly in the sidelines. for a smaller amount he had become a friend, or great friend.

Although Cliff has not been active on this forum for a long time due to his dedication to helping others which he prioritized over his love of knives, I count myself lucky enough to have been a friend who got to talk to him most weeks, or often daily. About knives, about life, philosophy, and a huge amount about the children that he was trying to give new life to through dedication, hard work, and education, and insane perseverance when confronted with extremely trying times.

In the knife world he caused a lot of conflict from people that didn't understand him, the didn't have the higher level of standards that he wanted to have towards knowledge. I think a lot of people simply misunderstood him, by not taking an extra moment to actually have a genuine conversation with him with ego removed.

What I discovered from Cliff over these many years was a selfless caring soul that would put all others before himself. to give, even if it meant to lose for himself. He set a moral standard in many ways too strict for the modern world, but at the same time a deep humor that often could confuse people that didn't know him well.

I remember well how i met Cliff, on youtube, in a comment on a video of mine. He asked a fairly simple question about the convex nature of the knife. a fairly innocent question in all cases, but at the time, all I knew of Cliff was all the stories and residuals on the internet, the banning from BladeForums etc etc, which led me to assume that he was simply there to troll me in some way or stir the pot. At the time, i think he had not been on the internet for quote a while (due to a sojourn in India)

so his simple question led to a tirade from me that when reading it later made me a little embarrassed, but laugh a bit at the same time. i was rude, condescending, affirmative, and in general said a few hundred words more than was necessary and waited for the typcial troll like response. But it didn't come what came back was a calm rational reply to the information he was asking about, and the portion of my reply that covered that, with a complete blind eye to everything else that I had said.

That moment in time is one I will never forget, because it is the moment I personally realized that something was deeply wrong with the impression I had garnered from a shallow but entertaining look through bladeforums archives.

It made me go and look at his videos a bit more, and listen to what he was saying. at which point it was obvious to me he was not what I thought. so my reply was of course to just say. "I have a knife i just made in the same steel as that one you commented on, i am curious if the issue is with a bad heat treat by the factory of the blade you have, or if it is really an inherent feature of the steel, can i send you a knife to compare"

he just replied sure as though nothing was afoot, and from that i got a fairly nice review of one of my knives. no praise because i was a brilliant knife maker. just praise because my knife behaved as he expected any decent knife that is not overbuilt should behave"

and from Troll, to amazing friend, to departed friend. This was an amazing ride and I am glad I am one of the few who got to know Cliff outside of just his love of knives and b-grade movies.

He was a giant. Physically, Intellectually, and Emotionally.
Knowing you are not there for our regular conversations each week is a deep loss to me. I hope you are in a better place.

Jocko Podcast #1 - With Echo Charles | Leadership, Ownership, Mental Toughness

-why get up early, because the reason most people don't is due to lack of discipline, start the day making the "hard" choice
-what drives you, fear, fear of failure/mistakes/looking stupid, what is the "other" guy doing
-mental toughness vs talent, long term success
-how do you develop mental toughness, do the "hard" things, the decision to have and achieve goals
-SEAL training eliminates those individuals very quickly who are not willing to make those choices
-what are the "five things" to stay on track, there is no magic list, be detached from the situation, this allows you to make choices
-how to step into a leadership role, be humble, listen, have actual skills relevant to the people you are leading, take ownership
-how to deal with people who do X, take accountability - focus on what YOU can do, not what they are not doing
-how ego gets in the way
-conspiracy theories, why waste your time, there are better things to do, he doesn't entertain them

Jocko, an obviously admirable person, seems to be unable to realize that while he is able to make the hard choices, he seems blindly indifferent to that not being possible for so many people. Telling people to "just be tougher" is like telling people who have anxiety "just stop worrying". He seems to not understand that there are people whose internal monologue is so different than his and this puts them in a situation where they literally can't decide. People can have severe chemical imbalances in brain chemistry which make a lot of what he is saying just as impossible as telling people to get up out of a wheelchair and "just walk".

However, the commentary on how to be a good leader, to focus on what YOU can do vs what is being done TO you, these are critical focus points. It is unfortunate that he isn't a little bit more educated on the Neuroscience as there are so many people who are "motivational" speakers who just ignore this and once you know the science, it comes off as just as ridiculous as telling people who have cancer to just "decide to be cured". That's cool, but you can't decide to do that. While it is true that in general, a lot of the time people will know what to do, it isn't them just as simple as deciding to do it.

This is a prime example of why things are so inflammatory over the internet :

This guy caught my attention as he was making interesting comments in other videos, often noting small changes in HRC would make significant differences in edge retention on cutting cardboard (like 2 points of HRC is 100% increase in edge retention). In this video and others he does examples of demonstrations he claims show that some of the steels he uses are very tough, not brittle, etc. and in comments he makes implications towards other makers that they are running the blades softer kind of at the expense of customers, just producing inferior blades.

My initial response :

"To start, always appreciate work on knives, of any nature. But a few points in regards to the conclusions :

-most of what you are testing is in fact hardness, not toughness, as the impacts are very light and so the edge is mainly having to resist deformation (and adhesive wear on metals) which it will do quite well at ~70 HRC

-if you are going to test fracture toughness, which is fairly hard to do due to the random nature of it, you likely want to have a control blade that you take to failure as a reference and do a large number of trials to even out random factors

I have for example done full steel cutting, 4" nails, with very thin ground blades (0.005"/15 dps) even in brittle steels like D2, and as long as you :

-control the blade well
-hit them just enough to cut, so the blade doesn't torque sideways

You can cut the steel without chipping, and since the steel is so hard and wear resistant, it will come through it almost unaffected and the blade looks magical. In reality that kind of thing is testing your skill more so than the knife. If you want to test toughness, give it to someone and don't tell them to be careful and watch what happens.

The reason that makers/manufacturers can't actually make steels this hardness and do this kind of promotion to say they are tough/durable/whatever is that people will use them for that kind of thing and result is a LOT of broken blades as they are not going to be that careful, hit that light, etc. ."

Is met with :

"Uhm, this test wasn't about impact toughness. This test was done to show people that high hardness isn't making a steel brittle and behave like glass. Now I am going to be quite direct with you now. I appreciate people commenting and participating in the community. But I ask you not to put words in my mouth. This test wasn't about impact toughness and as I clearly stated in the video, holding the blade vertical is critical - as you write in your comment as well. I also saw your comments under my other videos - due to your comments there and again here I respectfully have to insist that you do not make up straw man arguments and also watch more closely what I am doing - for example in the other of my videos where you commented you said that I was cutting writing paper and based your entire argument chain on that, while in reality I was cutting kitchen paper. I am not willing to engage in conversations without being on the same page. So please be on the same page before you comment. Thank you.
Oh yeah, another thing. Why did you start talking about what other makers/manufacturers do or don't do? It's not even remotely the topic here. Also, what makes you so sure about the reasons "the manufacturers" (which they are thousands of) don't do this? Have you talked to them? I personally haven't and can only ASSUME things - which again I didn't even do in this video. Just saying..."

He has another video where he does very similar things, and specifically refers to testing toughness :

But defending it by saying it is showing they are not brittle is the same issue, that isn't what brittle means. Brittle means a knife will fail without plastic deformation, nothing he does shows the steel isn't brittle, it just shows it is fairly hard.

This part in particular was odd :

" for example in the other of my videos where you commented you said that I was cutting writing paper and based your entire argument chain on that, while in reality I was cutting kitchen paper. "

It refers to this comment in another video, which he didn't even address in that video. I just have a decent memory for what I write which was :

""Hard to tell sharpness in slicing paper, that looks kind of thick. Could it for example push cut a piece of newsprint, an actual push cut (triple 90).""

Now he can't actually fight with me, as I will just ignore any personal commentary. In another reply to me he notes I am not familiar with modern steels and I need to do research and points me towards webpages of people I know, who write about topics I have discussed with them - which is kind of amusing.

The internet kind of does this, it amplifies people's desire to fight - you just have to then decide if YOU want to fight as well.

Quote
jasonstone20
I just don't like the Government of China. It has nothing to do with the people of China. I met David of Reate knives and Liong Mah. I like both of there knives and they seem to be decent hard working people. I believe that the Chinese Government owns a large percentage of every factory in China. I do not want to support the Chinese Government at all. I don't support how they treat their workers, i.e. having to put up suicide nets at the factories that build Apple phones because the workers are forced to work and can't quit. I have felt like this for a long time, but I felt that the average Chinese citizen would benefit from us buying the products they produce. After watching the protests in Hong Kong and the way they handled the virus situation, China isn't becoming more free as we all would have hoped it would. It is becoming more totalitarian and more authoritarian, and I refuse to support that.

Well, it looks like humanity is due for a pandemic, and this one might be it. A little preparation goes a long way, and hopefully once it starts warming up this virus will burn itself out. Panic and fear are the main enemy if you ask me, along with the virus. Get some dry goods, water, first aide and basic medicines while you can, both over the counter and prescription, since a lot of these are sourced in China, and China is under quarantine at the moment. In no way is this official advice, just my personal opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. I just thought it would be interesting to see how everyone was going through this and be able to report and brainstorm on things.
